Student Information System Serves 50 Percent of State’s K-12 Public School Districts

WEST WARWICK, RI – Follett Aspen® SIS Student Information System (SIS), which already is firmly established in Rhode Island as a partner to 50 percent of the state’s K-12 school districts, has again earned preferred vendor status from the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE). When purchasing a new SIS, school districts and RIDE can continue to adopt the Follett Aspen® SIS without first issuing a request for proposal.

West Warwick Public Schools, which has six schools and serves more than 3,400 students, in 2010 was the first Rhode Island district to adopt Follett Aspen® SIS.

“We are thrilled RIDE has renewed Aspen as a preferred SIS vendor,” said Jim Monti, director of technology, West Warwick Public Schools. “We continue to utilize Aspen as an essential tool in making educational decisions regarding our students and the adults that serve them. It’s amazing we’ve been using Aspen for almost a decade, yet we continue to discover new and innovative ways to use Aspen with our students, parents and educators. I’m excited about the future and can’t wait to see what innovations we’ll see over the next decade!”

In addition to a streamlined process removing the RFP mandate, schools in the state also will be able to negotiate more favorable prices with preferred vendors such as Follett. Rhode Island public schools serve 142,000 students in 36 districts and 286 schools.

In 2011, in response to the rapid growth of Follett Aspen® SIS in the state, a group of school administrators formed the Rhode Island Aspen User Group. Organizers say the User Group provides a forum to share ideas and best practices, as well as help districts in the state to effectively collaborate with each other.

Follett Aspen® is a 21st-century SIS that offers a mobile-friendly, one-stop application for teachers, administrators, and the school community. It hosts and manages student data, safely and securely stores data such as class schedules, student performance, health records, and athletic eligibility, and allows educators to closely monitor student progress, implement new curriculum, and conveniently communicate with parents.

Follett Aspen® SIS currently serves more than two million students throughout 240 school districts in the U.S. and Canada. Follett recently completed the Ed-Fi Data Standard Certification for Follett Aspen® SIS, which is essential for seamless integration between the SIS and other technology platforms, as well as empowering educators with key data.
