Beyond The Text: How to Build Voice, Trigger Literary Excitement and Confidence, and Engage Students Using Poetry

APR

26

Join New York Times best-selling author, Newbery Medal winner, and poet Kwame Alexander in this mini webinar. Alexander will offer ways educators can use poetry to have students share their thoughts and understanding of a text.

Successful writers are a vital component of effective literacy instruction and overall student achievement. To motivate students, there is no more accessible gateway than poetry (The Write Thing pg. 24). Writing shouldn't be an isolated part of instruction, either. During this engaging presentation, Kwame Alexander will share real examples of how this quick, easy genre, combined with books students choose to read, can cement their love of reading.

Participants will discover:
  • How poetry allows students to express themselves in different ways through style and form
  • How poetry can be used as an extension activity to any text
  • How student choice and writing can help students find their love of reading
