Teaching Verbal and Visual Literacy through Comics with FranÇoise Mouly

SEP

21

Learn more about comics when we are joined by FranÇoise Mouly, founder of TOON Books, as she discusses her groundbreaking work to publish comics for beginning readers.

We will discuss how:

  • Comics offer an expanded array of multimodal supports to assist readers in visualization, decoding text, and comprehending narratives.
  • Comics can be an effective on-ramp to grade-level text, particularly for reluctant readers.
  • TOON Books are carefully constructed by reading level and grade level so that teachers can then springboard into meaningful instruction about specific standards, including inferencing, predicting, envisioning, making connections, finding the main idea, and key details.

You'll also learn tips for making your own comics from TOON's Eisner Award-Winning title, Comics: Easy as ABC –The Essential Guide to Comics for Kids by Ivan Brunetti and edited by FranÇoise Mouly.
